(no subject)

I used to skip Latin class.

There, I said it.  I'm not proud of it; the teacher was one of the best teachers... no, one of the best people in my little hometown world, and I ditched his class.  I suck.  While I'm getting this all out there, I might as well admit that I never did my Physics homework on time, either.

Man, I'm feeling better already.

So now you're probably either wondering why I ditched the class of a man I respected, or you're already skipping on to the next entry in your friends' list.  If it's the latter, it's okay, I understand.  If it's the former, the answer is mcsassy, or, as I like to call her, d nice.

Actually, I think this is the first time I've ever called her that.  Whatever.  I have to stick to form.

She and a bunch of other folks would hang out in the cafeteria in the morning.  I think they all had free periods or something, or maybe they were ditching too, but are less retrospectively melodramatic about it.  In any case, I wound up with a large number next to "Latin" in the "Absences" column on a few report cards due to that posse.

See, the thing is that, to my high-school-addled mind, they were all so cool, and I wanted to be so cool so badly.  Oh yeah, I put on the "voluntary outsider" costume every day right before I caught my ride, but it was just as fake as everyone else's.  I look back on those years now, and I realize that, out of all the people I thought were cool, there's but a handful I still care about, and I keep in touch with them, at least intermittently.  I'm pretty happy with the way it's turned out, all in all.

Why's mcsassy still in my cool column?

She's got guts.  It's tough to uproot yourself from everything you know and love and move on.  Sometimes it's critical, but that doesn't make it easy.

She's got the soul of an artist.  I've always loved hanging out with artists; it makes me feel like I'm one too.  :)  As an added bonus, her art doesn't suck.

She's put up with my polarity and obsessive/compulsiveness and absurd, occasional possessiveness and self-righteousness and... well... the rest of me with grace for many, many years.

She has excellent taste in music.

Basically, some people are just born with a charisma that enchants and inspires the people around them.  They make their friends better just by being who they are.

This note is just to let you know that you've got a warm spot in my heart, D, and you always will.

Happy holidays!
