Little Differences

I packed up my annual donation to The Massachusetts Green Party into its envelope today. Into the mail it goes tomorrow. It's strange: I still have to fight the part of me that has been brainwashed by society into thinking that there are only two viable political choices in this country, even after years of supporting third party candidates. The constant barrage of cynicism from those I work with threatens constantly to drag me down to their cold, pessimistic level. Luckily for me, I do know others who believe in humanity as a whole. As Mary Travers said, "Be an optimist -- you meet a better class of people."

Why don't people care? Yes, I know their lives are busy, but so's mine. Yes, I know life has crushed dreams of theirs before, but I've got a little pile of idealistic pancakes in my closet, too.

Hmm, "Idealistic Pancakes" -- good band name.

History has taught us that people will only put up with so much before they revolt, but history has never had such a well fed, lazy, apathetic proletariat to work with. The real poor and downtrodden don't actually get to vote; we found that out in 2000.

What's the solution? I don't know, but I hope that by being optimistic and working on those around me I can make a little difference. Little differences multiply, after all.

Maybe my check is one of those little differences. It's going out in the mail tomorrow, in any case. Who knows?
